This holiday season give yourself a well-deserved gift, the gift of care and love. In other words, remember the “me” in “merry”. The holidays are as much a cheerful time as a stressful one. In between all the hustle and bustle of planning, cooking, traveling, managing, and cleaning, leave time to take care of yourself. One simple way of tying together all the self-care strategies and keeping yourself accountable is through the self-care triangle. Triangles represent stability, balance, enlightenment, and the union of the mind, body, and heart. Sounds awesome already doesn’t it? Each corner represents a different aspect you must focus on (all part of your “me-time”), each as important as the other, and without one the triangle is left incomplete, meaning your care is left incomplete. To begin, let's talk about physical activity. It's a fabulous way this holiday season to just have childlike fun. It helps stimulate your brain, boosting your positive emotions and reducing your stress and anxiety. Leaving you feeling more energetic, happier, and relaxed. You can go run and roll in the snow, build a snowman with your kids, or dance it all out to your favorite holiday music. Rest is the other component. Learn to say enough to your work and “no” to responsibilities so you can devote 7-8 hours of your night to sleep, and also take 5-10 minute breaks throughout the day to just sit, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Along with this, you can use the longer breaks for your hobbies, whatever that is. Taking a nap? Sure. Writing in your journal? Sure. Updating your scrapbook? Sure. Making a gratitude list? Go ahead. Whatever helps you check-in, reflect, be mindful and rejuvenate. Finally, let's talk about nourishment. Remember your food is your fuel. If you want to have energy, feel good, and have an optimistic look at life, good nutrition is key. Try to pack your meals with all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients required but also have fun with your meals. I know the holidays are filled with cooking but don’t do it all alone. Cooking is a great opportunity for bonding time with friends, family and the kids, so use it.

This wonderful time of year can also bring out a lot of emotions, baggage, and discomfort, it's important to take care of all that and not just let it hide away. I know the holidays are filled with miracles, but emotions and mental health issues don’t miraculously disappear, they build up. No one experiences perfect mental health at all times, you are not alone. It affects all aspects of our life and is just as important as physical health. Think about how you care for your kids, partner, parents, and friends when they are in need, give yourself that same opportunity. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion.
