Dentistry Research Receives $5M from CIHR

Six research projects lead by researchers in the Faculty of Dentistry and its affiliated institutes have been awarded Project Grants totaling nearly $5 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The CIHR’s Project Grant program captures ideas with the greatest potential to advance the health sciences, privileging projects that offer innovative and actionable research solutions. Among the 371 funded projects, the Faculty of Dentistry congratulates six of our own for their exciting research: Drs. Arkady Khoutorsky, Luda Diatchenko, Dieter Reinhardt, Mari Kaartinen, Maryam Tabrizian, and Jake Barralet.

Dr. de Souza Receives Grant

Congratulations to Dr. de Souza, who has been awarded a grant from the Drummond Foundation for his research exploring the relation between oral health and neurological diseases. Read more.

 

 

Dr. Allison Receives ADEA Award

Congratulations to Dr. Paul Allison on his award from the ADEA! As a recipient of the 2019 Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors Citation, Dr. Allison has demonstrated his commitment to dental education. Read more.

 

 

Oral Health Research Day 2019

DMD IV students presented their research to a packed room on January 15 during the annual Oral Health Research Day, where a panel of experts engaged the participants in stimulating discussion. Congratulations to the prize winners, and thank you to our event sponsors. Read more.

 

 

2019 Canada Food Guide Highlights Oral Health and McGill Dentistry Research

The 2019 Canada Food Guide highlights the importance of Oral Health, and cites research from McGill Dentistry members, including Dr. Allison, Dr. Power, Dr. Ravaghi. The focus on oral health is a first for the Food Guide, and signals an important success in Oral Health consciousness raising.

 

Dentistry Faculty Explore New Research Area

The number of forcibly displaced persons continues to grow—and yet policymakers still neglect the importance of oral health for these populations. To address the lack of the literature, Dr. Mary Ellen Macdonald and Dr. Mark Keboa are among oral health experts exploring a new priority area: oral health for refugees and asylum-seekers. Dr. Retrouvey Named AQD Fellow

Dr. Jean-Marc Retrouvey has been awarded the title of Fellow by the Académie dentaire du Québec, which recognizes dental professionals that have advanced the profession, served the community, and excelled in teaching and research. Congratulations, Dr. Retrouvey! Read more.

 

 

New Developments in Teledentistry

The Canadian Dental Association suggests, “teledentistry is positioned to transform access to oral healthcare” for many populations in remote areas. As many McGill Dentistry researchers are working on the future of digital dentistry, the Faculty encourages further collaborations and exploration of potential applications in teledentistry.

 

 

CIHR Highlights HOMEBASE

After a cycling accident left him with chronic pain, McGill Dentistry’s Dr. Richard Hovey founded HOMEBASE. The organization helps men affected by chronic pain rebuild their lives, and was recently feature by the CIHR. Read more.

DMD Student Delivers Toothbrushes, Oral Health Lessons, and Smiles to Kindergarten

DMD student Jean-Daniel Azuelos took some time away from studying during exam period to visit his son’s kindergarten, and what was planned as a half hour turned to an hour, and a room of 15 kindergarteners quickly turned to 60. Azuelos taught the children about the importance of oral health with various games, coloring books, and activities the kids are sure to remember. Read more.

The Faculty of Dentistry welcomes two new babies! Congratulations Brenna Kaukonen and her partner on the birth of their son Romain, as well as Marc O. Martel and his partner on the birth of their son Leon. We wish you the best!

 


OUTREACH & OPPORTUNITIES


 

 

 

Volunteer with the Québec Special Olympics during March break!

The Québec Special Olympics are looking for dentists, dental hygienists and volunteers for their oral health program. The provincial Winter games will be held from March 7 to 10 in Salaberry de Valleyfield. Meals will be provided, and travel expenses will be covered by the organizers. Consider spending March break making a difference!
