New to the Faculty

A message from Dean Allison

Dear colleagues and students,

It is a great pleasure to announce that as of July 1st, 2014, the new Director of the Division of Periodontics will be Dr. Omid Kiarash. As you know, in recent months the Faculty has engaged in a significant search process to identify a new Director of the Division of Periodontics and we are very pleased that Omid has accepted this important responsibility as a result of that process.

Omid is a DMD graduate of our Faculty in 2003, with a Diploma in Periodontics and Masters in Dentistry from Case Western Reserve University in 2006. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Since returning to Montreal following his specialist training in the USA, he has been working in private practice, and has been heavily involved in the Montreal Rive-Sud ITI Study Club, the Quebec Association of Periodontics, including currently being its Treasurer, and a number of other continuing education activities.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to again thank Dr. Veronique Benhamou for her excellent work and service as Director of the Division of Periodontics. She has been instrumental in creating a very good undergraduate periodontal program at the Faculty and one which is in excellent shape as we move into the new facility and make changes to our curriculum linked with the creation of the new 1st and 2nd year courses in the MD and DMD programs.

I know you will all join me in welcoming Omid and thanking Veronique.

Dean Paul

June 20th is UN World Refugee Day

"According to the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) the number of people currently in situations of displacement has hit 45 million, the highest figure for 14 years. 15.4 million internationally displaced refugees and 937,000 asylum seekers, as well as 28.8 million people forced to flee their homes within their own countries. As many as 55% of these refugees come from only five countries: Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Syria and Sudan. The United Nations' (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence."
