A message from Dean Allison

Dear colleagues and students,

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that this past week, Dr. Marie Dagenais, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry’s (ACFD) Biennial in Halifax. This is the ACFD’s most prestigious award and one that is not given annually but only when a nominated individual is deemed to merit the award – this is only the 3rd time the Association has bestowed this honour.

Marie was given this award because of her outstanding contribution to dental education across Canada. In addition to Marie’s excellent work at the Faculty, she has been very active at the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD), the National Dental Examining Board (NDEB) and more recently at the Commission of Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), taking leadership in dental education at a national level.

On behalf of the Faculty, I wish to congratulate Marie for all her work as a professional and teacher, and for being a tireless advocate for excellence in dental education, pushing the Faculty and various organisations to raise the standards and quality of dental education across Canada. This award is a reflection of the quality with which she has served the dental and higher education communities over the span of an illustrious career.

Friday June 21st, 12pm  End of the Year BBQ held in the Pre-Clinic, hosted by Dr. Robert Miller. For dental students Years 1-4 and faculty, to honor the second-year students who will graduate to the clinic in September.

Margo Nicholls-Spence

As we bid farewell to our colleague Margo Nicholls-Spence and wish her all the best in this next chapter, we asked her to share a few thoughts with us…

What is your favorite Memory at McGill?
I met some remarkably nice and interesting people during my time at McGill but in considering this question, undoubtedly my most wonderful memories are of singing with the McGill Choral Society, which I intend to continue doing.

What are you most looking forward to having more time to do?
Making music and helping others to do so.

Most important thing you’ve learned through your career?
The workplace has been one of my lesson books and has helped to develop my character, to strengthen my convictions and to apply them in very practical ways. I have learned to find something admirable in everyone, some, in spite of themselves.

On May 29 to June 1st, the Canadian Connective Tissue Conference 2013 was successfully organized by Dr. Monzur Murshed and Dr. Lisbet Haglund at McGill University. The Faculty of Dentistry, Réseau de recherche en santé buccodentaire et osseuse (RSBO) and the Arthritis Society were among the major sponsors. Dr. Simon Tran (Faculty of Dentistry) was one of the invited speakers while the keynote presentation was by Dr. Gerard Karsent (Columbia University, NY). A number of Dentistry students actively took part in organizing the conference and presented their work at several oral and poster sessions. Zohreh Khavandgar and Iris Boraschi-Diaz, two Faculty of Dentistry students received awards for best oral and poster presentations, respectively.
