2013 Chinese New Year Dinner for Outreach a great success!

A message from Dean Allison

Photo Ioana Dumitru

On February 20th, our 2013 Annual Chinese New Year Dinner took place once again. The event was organized by our 2nd year DMD class to raise funds for the Faculty’s Outreach program. This year marked the 10th edition of the event that has become a tradition in our Faculty, one through which we all come together to advance an important part of our mission: serving the community. The event was a great success with over 400 people in attendance to support our outreach initiatives. The evening even featured many of our Faculty’s very own talented students who performed and donated their artworks for the silent auction. The event came to life with a live band, a cellist, dancing and wonderful prizes. It was a fun evening and an excellent example of everyone’s dedication to the Faculty and to the Outreach program.

Our continuous commitment as a Faculty is what has made our Outreach program a model for dental schools across Canada. It is the reason why its excellence was also particularly recognized during our recent accreditation. Thanks to all of you for participating in such great numbers. And a special thank you to Chloë Fung, Natashia Bose-Roberts, Nazanin Hojjati and Tina Imbriglio who did a fantastic job in organising this year’s dinner for a cause that is so important to us all in our Faculty and that, as we know, impacts so many lives in our community.

Did you know?

February 28th is Rare Disease Day

There are between 6,000 and 8,000 rare diseases affecting 1 in 12 Canadians. Many others are affected or at risk but remain undiagnosed and unaware. Rare diseases are often caused by mutations in a single gene, unlike more common complex diseases involving many genes.  Thus, progress in understanding and treating single-gene-mutation rare diseases may move at a faster pace than for more complex diseases. (Data from Canadian Association for Rare Disorders and Rare Disease Day 2013)
