Dear Colleagues,
In recent weeks, we have been engaged in multiple meetings to understand and resolve the problems experienced in the new facility. Some are already resolved, some are being resolved and a few issues will be dealt with over the coming weeks or months. You can find an updated “Frequently Asked Questions” document that helps provide answers to problems identified by students and clinic support staff. In the coming weeks we will be organizing more meeting with the groups concerned to seek further feedback.

Two Faculty members amongst McGill researchers to receive $4.7M in NSERC project grants

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced 78 Strategic Project Grants, including 10 for McGill University researchers totaling nearly $4.7 million. 2 of these researchers are from or associated to the Faculty of Dentistry and have received funding to help support research or training with the potential to strongly enhance the economy or the environment. Student Spotlight: PhD student Mohamed Nur Abdallah is all about good time management

Currently a 3rd year PhD student, Mohamed juggles his time between his research, his TA responsibilities, chairing the annual Dentistry Research Day and being the Student Representative of the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR). Half Jordanian, half Greek-Cypriot, Mohamed has mastered not only three languages but three different alphabets! A soon-to-be first time dad, he sat down with me to talk about how he manages all of his responsibilities. Read the full interview here.  

Dr. Michael Wiseman visits the White House to launch pilot project

Dimitra Athanasiadou National Hellenic Student Association Scholarship

Congratulations to Dimitra Athanasiadou for being awarded the National Hellenic Student Association Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to Greek-Canadian scientists that excelled in their studies. Dimitra, a PhD student in Dr. Marc McKee’s lab, won the scholarship for the work she is doing in Craniofacial Health Sciences.   Read the full story here.

NCOHR Video Contest Closes Tomorrow

Three McGill Graduate students are entered in the NCOHR video contest to engage the public in oral health research. Online voting for the best video will close on February 27th at 6:00pm. Click here to vote!

Keynote speaker announced for the Annual Dentistry Research Day

We are pleased to announce that the keynote address will be given by Dr. Sam Harper (Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health, McGill University) who will give a talk entitled: “Cross-national perspectives on oral health inequalities: recent evidence from Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, and the United States”. For more information and to submit an abstract click here

Call for Nominations: Dr. H.S. Katz and Dr. R. Silverstone Teaching Awards

The Dr. H.S. Katz and Dr. R. Silverstone Teaching Awards acknowledge a colleague’s superior teaching or outstanding contribution to the Faculty. Thank you for taking the time to vote.

Dr. H.S. Katz Teaching Award will be presented to a member of the Faculty of Dentistry for superior teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.  

Dr. Ralph Silverstone Teaching Award recognizes an outstanding contribution by a clinical or laboratory supervisor, teaching in the undergraduate DMD program in Dentistry.

Consult the above linked procedures and send your nominations to Mrs. Michelle Dion by e-mail or in a sealed envelope no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, March 9th, 2015.

More cuts coming, but it could have been worse

Budget cuts of 2 to 3 per cent on average are predicted for academic and administrative units, respectively, and a deficit in the next fiscal year of about $14 million.
