A message from Valerie Khayat, Communications Officer

Photo Ioana Dumitru

Dear colleagues and students,

As many of you know, I will soon be leaving the Faculty of Dentistry to transition into a new communications role in McGill's University Advancement Unit as part of the Digital Strategy Team on September 8th. This is therefore my last e-flash (but I do hope it continues!).

The e-flash and Conversation Series were only part of one facet of my mandate as Communications Officer here but they gave me the unique opportunity to experience the richness of this faculty. When I created these initiatives, my vision was to give you all "a virtual stage" through which to share your successes, your stories and get to know your colleagues better. I am very happy these initiatives resonated with you so much. I want to thank you all for participating so actively and helping them grow into what they became. I also want to say a special thank you to my e-flash "teammate", our web manager, Jim Morris for always ensuring that the technical side of things ran so efficiently.

Although a communications officer's role is many fold, much of it pertains to identifying interesting information and communicating it in such a way that others will also take notice. Finding interesting content was not a difficult task in Dentistry. I realized quickly that this faculty is filled with bright and dedicated individuals all around but most importantly, that there are very big hearts behind all this talent.

Many of you have offered me kind wishes and very touching words upon the news of my departure. I want to thank you for making my work here such a formative experience. Thank you for sharing your stories and your passion for what you do. Whether we collaborated closely or only exchanged a few emails or a chat every now and then, I've learned something from all of you and this will remain with me for a long time.

Warm regards,

2014 Edition of the Dentistry Explore Careers in Health Workshop Team with Dr. Frances Power (OHS), Dr. Frazer (Alumnus and Endodontist) & Marie-Claude Loignon (Admissions)

On July 4th, a few of our dental students welcomed high school students for the 2014 Edition of the Dentistry Explore Career in Health Workshop. These students came from two main populations: First Nations Territories in Quebec and underprivileged areas in Montreal. We were fortunate to have Dr. Greg Frazer with us that day. Dr. Frazer is a member of the Six Nations Mohawk Territory, a 1982 Faculty of Dentistry Alumnus as well as an Endodontist. Our students did a wonderful job and the event was a success!

People News

This summer, Andrew Toeman, DDS '66, participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer for the 2nd year, as a cancer survivor, and raised $9,000 to combat this terrible disease. The team of 20 he is part of contains several survivors and, at $100,000, is the team (that is, not a corporation) in Quebec having raised the most funds. He has also put together a team of 7 so far, including former dentistry classmate Don Taylor, to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in April 2015.

New to the Faculty

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to welcome three new staff members during recent weeks.

Ann Samson started on July 28th as Manager of Clinic Administration.  Ann comes to this very important role in the Faculty with excellent previous experience having previously worked for the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and the Emergency Department at the MGH.

Jacques Lemaire started on August 4th and is joining us as a member of our new sterilization team.  Jacques comes to us with a great deal of industry experience and has immediately started working with Wendy Somerville and Ann Samson.

Marie Vigouroux started with the Faculty on August 11th as the new part-time administrator of our Mobile Clinic Outreach program.  Marie will be taking over this role from Wendy Somerville, and will be working closely with Drs. Bruce Dobby, Kwong Li and Frances Power in the running of that clinic.

Finally, as some of you will already know, Wendy Somerville, who has previously been jointly responsible for infection control and administering the mobile clinic outreach program, has recently expanded her infection control role and dropped the outreach role.  Because of of the new sterilization, infection control and related procedures at our new facility, we are very pleased that Wendy has agreed to make leadership in infection control her full time role with the Faculty.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wendy for her dedication and hard work over the past few years to make our mobile clinic outreach program the success that it is.

Please join me in wishing Wendy all the best in her new role and welcoming our new staff members Ann, Marie and Jacques.
