It is with great sadness that the Faculty announces the tragic and sudden death of Dr. Tim Head on Friday March 22nd. Tim started as a member of the Faculty in 1980 and became head of the Faculty’s Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery unit, including the OMFS residency program from 1998-2008. He remained a very active member of the Division of OMFS and the Faculty and the broader dental community until his untimely death. He was heavily involved in the Canadian Association of OMFS, becoming President in 2000-01. He remained highly active in leadership roles concerning education in implantology, being president of the Canadian ITI-section. He was also a long time examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. As a reflection of the esteem the Faculty held for Tim, he was the first internal (Faculty) member to be invited as the keynote speaker at the Faculty’s White Coat ceremony in September 2012.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues during this very difficult time. The Faculty, dental and broader community is in shock and mourns the loss of this mentor and very special man who has touched and enriched the lives of countless people. At the present time, Tim’s family has not expressed any intentions to hold a public funeral service. It goes without saying that our Faculty and the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery will, in due time, plan a memorial to recognize his invaluable contribution to our community and our profession. We will keep you all informed on these details.
We are certain many of you would like to extend your condolences and perhaps share your memories of Tim with his family. We invite you to send these at news.dentistry@mcgill.ca, which we will gather and relay to them on your behalf.
He will be greatly missed by so many.
