How to keep it NEAT this spring with Jen Rowe of NEAT Method Toronto:

Now, we're all humans, nobody is perfect, and homes are meant to be lived in. After most spaces are organized, they're bound to look a bit different as you live in them day-to-day. But the systems we put in place make resetting them and tidying up a breeze. With that, Jen has pulled together five tips and tricks you can do to maintain the order this season.

  • The one-touch rule: If something is out of place, you should try to only touch it once before it's back where it belongs.
  • Simplify your weekly routine: Break your week up into smaller, manageable chunks of time. Instead of spending all of Sunday doing all the chores, all the week's laundry, all the food prep, break your week up into smaller, manageable chunks of time. Do a load of laundry on two weeknights and fold it while you watch TV. Do one quick chore a couple of times a week. All of this will reduce the weekend burden.
  • Tackle one space at a time: Organizing can be overwhelming, and that can add unnecessary stress to your life, which is the opposite result we're after. Spend time organizing one space, then take a break and move on to the next.
  • The one in, one out philosophy: Don't bring more items into your home unless you're intending to part with an equal number. So if you want to buy a new shirt, what shirt are you giving up to make room for it?
  • Ten-minute tidy: The great thing about a method like ours is that there's a place for everything, and the labels are a reminder of that. So, each evening, it will make a quick reset a breeze. And spending just ten-minutes doing this quick tidy will help you regain order so that the next morning is a fresh start.

Jen has spent the better part of her nearly 20-year career in corporate communications, primarily in the non-profit sector, but has always been an organizer at heart. When she became a parent to her now 5- and 7-year olds, she started to dive deeper into how best to maximize the space in her family’s east end home and make it highly efficient for their lifestyle. In 2019, she parlayed this skillset into a career with NEAT Method.

Jen loves reading with her kids, trying out new gluten-free recipes, practicing Pilates and hot yoga, and sits on the Board of Directors for a local non-profit.
