A message from Campus Life & Engagement, the one office dedicated to new McGill students.

Dear Campus Life & Engage,

Congratulations on your offer of acceptance to McGill, and welcome to our community!

The team at Campus Life & Engagement (CL&E) is here to help you get acquainted with McGill and support you as you navigate your new environment. We know that the last few months have held both excitement and uncertainty as you prepare for your first year of university during the current global climate. Know that we’ll be here with you every step of the way—in our weekly pre-arrival communications, we’ll be directing you towards a number of revamped resources, informing you about how to access services, and sharing need-to-know info.

McGill recently announced that our courses will be offered primarily through remote delivery platforms in the Fall 2020 semester. We know this semester will look different than you had pictured—though we may be learning and living separately, you are still a part of an incredible community that is constantly finding new ways to connect. For a glimpse into this community, check out this video.

You can find McGill’s latest updates and resources on the McGill Coronavirus website, and FAQs around admissions on the I’ve Been Accepted website. As the situation is extremely fluid, it's also important that you consult this information in combination with your local governments' recommendations about housing, travel, and public health and safety.

Important reminder: you must confirm your offer of acceptance no later than midnight tonight.

This email will cover important information for the academic year, as well as guidance on how to register for your courses, so be sure to read through to the end.

Course Registration: Getting Started

Know the Basics

Get to know the Faculties and Schools, the different types of courses, and the grading modes with the McGill 101 module on myCourses.

  1. Log in to myCourses (McGill’s online hub for courses and other learning) using your McGill username and password.
  2. Click on the McGill 101 module. Don’t see it on your screen? Email us with your name, faculty and student ID number and we will add you to the class list as soon as possible.
  3. Go to Getting Started, then click on Registration.
  4. The videos Getting Ready to Register and Registering with Minerva will both be useful to you as you begin the registration process. The Need to Know section also includes an All About Courses series.

Plan Ahead

  • Know your year of study: U0 or U1? Verify your year of study by logging onto Minerva and following Registration Menu > Step 1: Check your Registration Eligibility and Verify Your Curriculum.
  • Plan your program: Start thinking about how you plan to fulfill both your degree and program requirements during your time at McGill! You’ll find degree requirements according to your year of study and Faculty in the Course Selection & Advising Information section on McGill's I've Been Accepted website.
  • Will you need to take a placement exam? Some courses offer placement tests to evaluate students’ proficiency.

Build Your Schedule

  • Take some time before registration opens to decide which classes you need to take and in which semester(s) they are available. Preparing your schedule before you register saves you time and stress! Remember, you are registering for both the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 semesters.
  • McGill’s Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) allows you to visualize what your weekly class schedule will look like before Minerva opens for registration

Identify your Registration Date

Registration becomes available on Minerva at 9 a.m. on your designated registration day. Your registration day will depend on your year of study, your Faculty, and whether or not you are a scholarship recipient, so make sure to carefully check the chart on the I’ve Been Accepted webpage to find your date.

Don’t forget to register for at least one course by August 14 to avoid a late fee!

Ready, Set… Register!

All course registration happens on Minerva, using your McGill username and password to log in. Select Student Menu > Registration Menu from the Main Menu to verify your registration eligibility and program, browse available classes by faculty and department, register for specific classes, confirm your registration fees, and view your weekly schedule. See our step by step guide to the registration process on the First-Year website.
