Reappointment of Bryce Traister as Dean, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that the UBC Board of Governors has approved the reappointment of Dr. Bryce Traister as Dean, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS), for a second five-year term, commencing February 1, 2023. Dr. Traister is a Professor of English and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley.

During his first term as Dean of FCCS, Bryce made an immense impact—in the Faculty, at UBC and in the broader community—and is highly regarded as an academic leader.

In 2018 he led the reorganization of the Faculty structure, establishing three departments that champion innovative work and offer a suite of undergraduate programs. He has also successfully led the growth and restructuring of a number of academic programs, including the revised Bachelor of Arts and its broad integration across the campus, positively impacting thousands of students. Dr. Traister has also led a significant expansion of the Faculty’s professoriate.

Bryce has led a number of important initiatives to strengthen and demonstrate the Faculty’s commitment to Indigenous engagement and equity, diversity and inclusion. Such initiatives include the appointment of Okanagan Nation Alliance Elders as adjunct professors and working with them to deliver Indigenous cultural safety training programs for students, faculty and staff; supporting the Faculty’s Indigenous Engagement Strategy Committee; and implementing and prioritizing inclusive hiring practices across all departments.

I appreciate Bryce’s leadership and I look forward to working with him during his next term. I would also like to thank the President’s Advisory Committee, and students, faculty and staff who provided feedback during this process.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rehan Sadiq
