Update on Kelowna Regional Transit service disruption

Dear colleagues,

Further to the global email that was sent on September 1, the BC Transit strike action has unfortunately escalated.

BC Transit issued an advisory today, notifying its riders that effective tomorrow, Thursday, September 15, transit workers will no longer be working overtime hours which will impact service within the Kelowna Regional Transit System.

To ensure you have the most up-to-date projected stop arrival times, and to see live bus locations, you can explore NextRide and make a plan before you go. You are also encouraged to register for transit alerts by visiting the news section of the BC Transit website, selecting “email advisories” and inputting your information. We will also continue to do our best to keep you updated through the following channels:

We anticipate that there will be an increased demand for parking on campus due to the potential transit disruptions. We encourage you to begin considering alternate forms of getting to campus including:

There are various cycling routes to get to campus, one of the most popular being the Okanagan Rail Trail, a fully separate path connecting Kelowna International Airport to the north and downtown to the south. For additional routes, please see the City of Kelowna’s Active by Nature Route Map or search for Kelowna bike routes on Google Maps.

SPIN and LIME operate their programs of shared e-bikes on campus. Download the SPIN or LIME app and start riding today.

There are several connections for pedestrians walking to campus from nearby neighbourhoods. Learn more here.

Carpooling offers many benefits including cost savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions. To try and get as many people to campus in as few vehicles as possible, UBCO offers designated carpooling parking in Lot G and Lot H that is available to people with two or more people. More details can be found on the Parking Services website.

The turn-around loop on Athletics Court adjacent to Parking Lot M and the Gymnasium are convenient locations to pull through and let passengers disembark without disrupting traffic.

We will continue to actively monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
