Paid HR Research Intern

...Participation of community health workers (CHWs) in the provision of primary health care has been documented all over the world for decades, and there is an amount of evidence showing that they can significantly add to the efforts of improving the health of the population, particularly in settings with high shortage or turnover of health professionals. CHWs could play an important role in increasing access to health care and services, and in turn, improved health outcomes, as an effective link between the community and the formal health system.

Moreover, CHWs could be a critical component in the efforts for a wider approach that takes into account social and environmental determinants of health. Particularly in Nunavik, the needs to ensure a continuum of care in the midst of high staff turnover, to increase community confidence in the health system and to change people’s behavior towards recognizing the signs and symptoms of TB and seeking care early are crucial for the elimination of the disease.

CHW is not a job title officially recognized by the ¨Ministere de la Santé et de Services Sociaux¨. In order to categorize the skills and competencies required for the CHWs we are seeking a Research Intern to:

  • Review the different occupations and job titles in Quebec
  • Compare the nature of the work, the main duties, the skills and competencies required for the CHWs with other occupations
  • Highlight the required training of similar occupations
  • Identify which order(s) would likely serve as an umbrella for the CHWs

The Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) annual Mental Health Week takes place from May 3rd to May 9th, 2021. This year, we are being reminded to “Name it, don’t numb it”. Understanding our emotions and naming how we feel is good for us on so many levels! The CMHA’s article “Name it to tame it” provides useful tips for building your emotion-naming muscles— one of the first steps to ensuring a healthy mental well-being. If your emotions are overwhelming, persistent and/or are interfering with your daily functioning, it’s important to seek mental health support. Find related information and articles here from the CMHA.
