Henrietta "Mimi" Galiana, Professor Emerita:
New Entrepreneur, Still Putting Students First


Retirement means different things to different people. For Mimi Galiana, Professor Emerita, it meant launching a startup company that uses eye-tracking in virtual reality to deliver better care for concussions and vestibular disorders. While new to entrepreneurship, Mimi continues to nurture her strong roots at McGill, with a new effort to help students early on in their research careers. The newly launched “Dr. Henrietta Galiana Travel Award in Biomedical Engineering” will help graduate students attend their first scientific conference in their thesis area. Innovation & Translation: McGill Spinoff Founded by Louis Collins acquired by a French Company to Expand Innovative Technology


True Positive Medical Devices Inc. (TPMD), a Canadian company based on technology developed by McGill’s Biomedical Engineering Professor Louis Collins and Laval Professor Simon Duchesne was recently acquired by Qynapse Inc. of Paris, France. TPMD, founded in 2011, was identified by Qynapse as one of the most impressive scientific and technological asset bases in neuroimaging and AI applied to brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis. The new company, called Qynapse Canada Inc., will expand patient access to this exciting technology around the world. Read more.



The Mimi Galiana Travel Award: Helping Young Researchers Expand their Horizons


In honour of Dr. Henrietta “Mimi” Galiana’s devotion to student well-being during her tenure at McGill, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has established the Dr. Henrietta Galiana Travel Award in Biomedical Engineering. This endowed bursary provides stipends to graduate students in Biomedical Engineering to attend their first scientific conference in their thesis area. Read more. Make a Gift.

Student Profile: Michael Yitayew, PhD Candidate, Biological & Biomedical Engineering


Michael Yitayew is a Ph.D. candidate in the Biological & Biomedical Engineering (BBME) program, under the supervision of Prof. Maryam Tabrizian. Arriving with a Bachelor of Science in Biology-Chemistry from the University of New Brunswick, Michael joined the McGill BBME program as a Master’s student. After earning his M.Eng., Michael continued in the BBME program as a Ph.D. student. He has also served as Chair of the BBME Student Society (BBMESS) Council for 4 years. We asked Michael a few questions about his student experience, his hopes for the future, and what makes McGill special to him. Read More.
